Product Description

Winchester Model 97 E-Series 16 Gauge Takedown Pump Shotgun, 28-Inch Modified Choke, 1940 Production

This 1940 Winchester Model 97 E-Series Takedown Field Grade is a classic exposed-hammer pump shotgun chambered in 16 gauge. The matching-number receiver and barrel retain their original two-piece takedown design, and the factory 28-inch barrel with modified choke offers period-correct configuration. Reliable slam-fire capability, a ribbed walnut slide, and straight-grained walnut stock round out a collectible, still-functional field gun from Winchester’s golden era.

    Condition

Overall Condition: Fair – Extensive finish loss, scratches, and handling marks are present, but the shotgun remains functional.
Bore Condition: Fair – Bore is generally clean and shiny with light residue and slight corrosion.

    What’s Included

    • Winchester Model 97 E-Series Takedown Field Grade 16 Gauge shotgun

Produced in 1940, the E-prefix serial number places this shotgun among the final pre-war Model 97 runs. Multiple patent dates are roll-marked on the barrel, and the Winchester “WP” proof remains clear on both receiver and barrel.

The takedown system separates the barrel assembly from the receiver for easier transport and cleaning. Matching serial numbers on both halves confirm the set has stayed together since leaving the factory.

The 28-inch carbon-steel barrel wears its original plain finish and a single brass bead up front. A fixed modified choke and 2 3/4-inch chamber allow the use of modern 16-gauge ammunition.

True to Model 97 lineage, an external hammer and single trigger provide familiar controls. Holding the trigger while cycling the action enables Winchester’s well-known slam-fire feature for rapid follow-up shots.

Furniture consists of an un-checkered walnut stock with semi-pistol-grip and a ribbed walnut slide handle. The hard-rubber buttplate bears the Winchester logo, and the 14-inch length of pull offers traditional field gun dimensions.
