Product Description

Winchester Model 1887 Large-Frame 10 Gauge Lever-Action Shotgun, 30" Barrel, Factory “WRA Co.” Engraved, 1891 Production

Manufactured in 1891, this large-frame Winchester Model 1887 represents John M. Browning’s pioneering lever-action shotgun design in its original black-powder 10 gauge configuration. Early production features include a 30-inch rolled-steel barrel, case-hardened receiver with factory interlaced “W R A Co” monogram, and walnut furniture. With only about 64,855 Model 1887s produced before the line ended in 1899—and far fewer in 10 gauge—surviving examples are scarce, making this antique a notable piece for Winchester collectors.

    Condition

Overall Condition: Fair – shows extensive signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Condition: Fair – generally clean with some residue or smudges and slight corrosion; moderate lead or copper fouling with noticeable buildup.
Specific Condition Notes: Exterior metal exhibits heavy surface rust, and the bore shows areas of heavy corrosion. Wood stock and fore-end display numerous handling marks and bruises consistent with long service.

    What’s Included

    • Winchester Model 1887 10 Gauge lever-action shotgun

Introduced in 1887, the Model 1887 was Winchester’s first repeating shotgun and one of the earliest successful lever-action designs for shotshells. This example falls in the desirable early serial range and retains its original 2 7/8-inch chamber intended for black-powder 10 gauge loads.

The large-frame receiver is case-hardened steel and displays Winchester’s factory “WRA Co” monogram on the left flat, a decorative element found only on early production guns. This factory engraving adds authenticity and collector appeal.

The shotgun carries its original 30-inch rolled-steel barrel, giving it the classic long-tube profile associated with 19th-century sporting and guard guns. A brass bead front sight provides the period-correct aiming reference; no rear sight was fitted at the factory.

The lever-action feeds from a four-round tubular magazine, allowing a 4+1 capacity. Walnut stock and matching fore-end retain an oil finish that complements the blued and case-hardened steel surfaces.
