H&R Topper Model 48 .410 Bore Single-Shot Shotgun, 28" Fixed Full Choke, Pre-1968 Production
This Topper Model 48 represents H&R’s first use of the “Topper” name and dates to the 1943–1956 run, identifiable by its lack of a serial number and the “s” date code beneath the model marking. Chambered in .410 Bore, it combines a 28-inch carbon-steel barrel with a factory-fixed full choke, making it a light, handy choice for small-game and field use. An aftermarket ventilated brown rubber recoil pad extends the length of pull to 14 inches, and the early side-lever release adds collectible appeal.

What’s Included
- Harrington & Richardson Topper Model 48 .410 single-shot shotgun
- Aftermarket ventilated brown rubber recoil pad (installed)
The 28-inch carbon-steel barrel wears a deep blued finish and is threaded directly to a fixed full choke. This setup preserves the lightweight handling the Topper line is known for while delivering tight patterns on small game and varmints.
A side-lever action release, unique to early Topper 48 production, provides quick one-handed opening for loading and unloading. The break-action design includes a rebounding external hammer that acts as a passive safety by moving off the firing pin after discharge.
The hardwood pistol-grip stock and semi-beavertail fore-end feature an oil finish that resists moisture and maintains a classic field gun look. The installed ventilated recoil pad moderates felt recoil and brings the length of pull to 14 inches for a comfortable shoulder fit.
Sighting is straightforward with a single brass bead up front and no rear sight, keeping the shotgun light and snag-free. The single-trigger system and fixed full choke make this .410 a simple, effective tool in the field or at the range.
