Remington introduced the Model 740 in 1955 as its first gas-operated hunting rifle, paving the way for the later 742 and 7400 series. Approximately 251,000 were produced before the line ended in 1960, making this 1957 example part of a limited early run.
The rifle’s gas system cycles standard .30-06 cartridges quickly and reliably, giving the shooter a 4+1 capacity with the detachable box magazine. A right-side reciprocating charging handle and familiar bolt-hold-open feature keep operation straightforward.
The 22" blued barrel carries a ramped bead front sight and an adjustable step-elevator rear sight. For optics, the receiver top is factory drilled and tapped for scope bases, allowing easy mounting without gunsmithing.
Walnut furniture highlights classic lines. The fore-end features Remington’s distinctive "speed-line" grooves for a secure grip, while sling-swivel studs add field versatility. The aftermarket ventilated recoil pad extends length of pull to 13.5" and helps soften felt recoil from the .30-06 chambering.
