Browning-Remington Auto-5 American Standard Grade 12 Gauge, 30" Barrel, WWII-Era U.S. Production
This American Standard Grade Auto-5 stands out as one of the limited 12-gauge “American Brownings” built by Remington for Browning after World War II. Produced in 1949, it combines the classic long-recoil action of John M. Browning’s design with U.S. wartime tooling, marked by the distinctive oval “UP” proof on the barrel extension. Collectors value these shotguns for their scarce U.S.
manufacture—only about 38,000 12-gauges were made—and for their mix of Browning roll marks with Remington production quality.
Condition
Overall Condition: Fair condition, showing extensive signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Condition: Fair – Generally clean, some residue or smudges, slight corrosion.
Specific Condition Notes: Minor to moderate scratching and scuffing are visible on the metal and wood. The walnut stock was previously relacquered, resulting in an uneven finish, and the replacement buttplate does not fit flush.
What’s Included
- Browning-Remington Auto-5 American Standard Grade 12 Gauge shotgun with 30" Special Steel barrel
- Installed ventilated “White Line” recoil pad with black/white spacer
Remington built this Auto-5 under license in Ilion, New York, making it one of the very few examples of Browning’s legendary design produced in the United States. The barrel carries both the St. Louis address and Remington proof, confirming its unique hybrid heritage.
The shotgun retains its original 30" Special Steel barrel chambered for 2 ¾" shells, delivering the classic Auto-5 balance and swing many upland hunters appreciate. A single brass bead up front provides a simple, reliable sight picture.
Features include the long-recoil semi-automatic action, a cross-bolt safety behind the trigger guard, and Browning’s magazine cut-off on the left side of the receiver—handy for quickly unloading the chamber without disturbing the magazine tube.
The round-knob walnut stock and matching fore-end display factory checkering. A later-added ventilated “White Line” pad brings length of pull to 14.25", softening recoil while adding a period-correct custom touch.
