The BRN-601 is Brownells’ faithful, limited-run reproduction of the first Colt Model 601 AR-15 issued to the U.S. military. Built on forged 7075-T6 receivers with a gray Type III hard-coat anodized finish, it mirrors the original’s slick-side upper, slab-side lower, early triangular handguards, and three-prong flash hider. Collectors and shooters looking for an authentic early-AR experience will appreciate the correct 1:12" twist chrome-moly barrel, fixed brown stock, and period-correct controls.

This BRN-601 captures the look and feel of the early 1960s AR-15 down to the smallest detail. The slick-side upper lacks a forward assist and shell deflector, and the lower receiver is the correct slab-side pattern without a magazine fence. An early screw-in front pivot pin and slim magazine release button further match original 601 features.
The 20-inch chrome-moly barrel wears a phosphate finish, lightweight profile, and original-pattern three-prong flash hider threaded 1/2x28. A 1:12 right-hand twist mirrors the specification used for M193 ball ammunition during the Model 601 era.
Furniture is true to period. Brown polymer A1-length stock, Type E pistol grip, and triangular handguards replicate the colors and contours of the first production rifles. Iron sights consist of the F-marked front post and an integral carry-handle rear sight adjustable for windage.
Internally, the BRN-601 uses a direct-impingement, rotating-bolt action and a lightweight buffer system, keeping unloaded weight to about 6 lb 11 oz.
