Smith & Wesson Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman .357 Magnum Revolver, 4" Heavy Barrel (1974 N-Frame)
Built in 1974 on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame, this Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman delivers the strength of the famed Model 27 in a matte blue, duty-ready package. Its pinned 4-inch heavy barrel, recessed and heat-treated cylinder, and smooth combat trigger reflect the final evolution of the series before S&W discontinued those features in 1986. Collectors value the 28-2 for its robust build and limited production window, while shooters appreciate its balance and manageable recoil.

The serial number prefix N226xxx places this revolver in the 1974–1975 production range, an era prized for pinned barrels and recessed chambers now absent from later models. As a service-grade counterpart to the deluxe Model 27, the Highway Patrolman shares the same forged components and N-frame strength but opts for a non-polished matte blue finish that resists glare in the field.
The 4-inch carbon-steel barrel carries a serrated rib that cuts reflections while adding mass for steadier follow-up shots. The fully adjustable Micrometer rear sight and integral serrated ramp front sight provide a crisp sight picture that can be tuned for varied .357 Magnum and .38 Special loads.
Controls include a smooth, combat-width trigger and a wide-spur hammer, both ideal for double-action duty or single-action precision. Smooth Goncalo Alves target stocks with inlaid S&W medallions fill the hand and complement the revolver’s utilitarian appearance.
Because production of the Model 28 ceased in 1986, examples that retain their original pinned and recessed configuration—especially with factory target stocks—are increasingly scarce, making this Highway Patrolman both a capable shooter and a solid addition to any Smith & Wesson collection.
