Product Description

    Winchester Model 12 Field Grade 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun – 1914 First-Year Production, 28" Full Choke Nickel-Steel Barrel

This Winchester Model 12 Field Grade stands out as a first-year 12-gauge example from 1914, carrying matching receiver and barrel numbers that confirm its early production status. The shotgun retains its original 28-inch Nickel-Steel barrel with factory full choke and classic takedown design, paired with an early 12-groove corncob walnut forend. An aftermarket Pachmayr “White Line” ventilated recoil pad adds custom comfort while shortening the length of pull to 13.5 inches. Collectors will appreciate the combination of early features and authentic Winchester markings that define this well-used yet historically significant pump gun.

    Condition

Overall Condition: Fair — shows extensive signs of prior use and handling.

Bore Condition: Good — clean and smooth with minor wear marks.

Specific notes: The walnut stock displays a large crack and widespread surface wear. Wood furniture shows heavy scratches and dents. The receiver has scattered pitting and dents consistent with hard field use. An aftermarket Pachmayr “White Line” ventilated recoil pad with white spacer replaces the original buttplate.

    What’s Included

    • Winchester Model 12 Field Grade 12 Gauge pump-action shotgun (matching-number receiver and barrel)

Built in Winchester’s first year of 12-gauge Model 12 production, this shotgun bears serial 684xx, aligning with 1914 factory records. The early manufacturing date places it among the initial runs that helped cement the Model 12’s reputation for smooth cycling and rugged reliability.

The 28-inch Nickel-Steel barrel is roll-marked with Winchester’s patent list ending July 22 1913 and “Nickel Steel”—a proprietary alloy prized for its strength. The factory full choke and 2 ¾-inch chamber make the gun suitable for traditional field and trap roles.

An early 12-groove corncob forend, later discontinued, complements the classic straight-grained walnut stock. Though visibly worn, these original wood components underscore the shotgun’s authentic period configuration.

The gun retains its takedown mechanism, allowing barrel and receiver separation for transport or maintenance—a hallmark feature of early Model 12s.

A Pachmayr “White Line” recoil pad, installed by a previous owner, brings the length of pull to 13.5 inches while adding modern shooting comfort.
