Product Description

    Remington Model 788 Left-Hand .308 Win. Bolt-Action Rifle, 22" Blued Barrel, 1971 Production

This factory left-hand Remington Model 788 is a 1971-dated example chambered in .308 Winchester. Produced in limited numbers from 1969–1980, the southpaw variant pairs the 788’s well-known accuracy with true left-hand bolt operation. A 22-inch chrome-moly barrel, sturdy walnut/birch Monte Carlo stock, and rear-locking nine-lug action give this rifle practical performance that appeals to shooters and collectors alike.

    Condition

Overall Condition: Very good condition, showing only light, superficial signs of prior handling or use.

Bore Condition: Excellent - Clean, mirror finish, no signs of wear.

Bore Rifling: Excellent Rifling - Sharp lands and grooves.

Specific Condition Notes: This rifle shows only mild handling wear, yet remains in excellent shape overall for its age.

    What’s Included

    • 1 factory 3-round detachable magazine stamped "308 WIN."
    • Pair of 1" steel scope rings

The Model 788 action uses nine rear-locking lugs and a short 60° bolt lift, delivering fast lock time and solid case support. Combined with the rigid receiver and single-stack magazine, it earned a reputation for bench-rifle accuracy straight from the factory.

This example retains its original open sights: a serrated steel ramp front (dovetail blade slot) and an elevation-adjustable leaf rear on a barrel-mounted ramp. The receiver is drilled, tapped, and fitted with 1-inch rings, ready for optics without altering the rifle.

The 22-inch chrome-moly barrel carries the "WU" inspection date stamp, confirming 1971 manufacture. A 1:12" right-hand twist stabilizes common .308 bullet weights, while the clean, mirror-bright bore preserves the rifle’s accuracy potential.

The uncheckered hardwood stock features a Monte Carlo comb, gloss finish, factory recoil pad, and installed sling swivel studs. A 14-inch length of pull accommodates most adult shooters, and the left-side bolt handle keeps cycling intuitive for left-handed operators.

Early-production safety design means the bolt can only be cycled with the safety in the "fire" position—a characteristic detail of original 788s. Overall, this is a well-preserved, limited-run left-hand rifle ready for the range or collection.
