The L-prefix serial number places manufacture in the mid-1970s, while the “W” suffix confirms a factory 16 gauge receiver. Remington ended 16 gauge 1100 production in the late 1980s, so surviving examples carry added collector interest, especially those still wearing their original barrels and furniture.
The shotgun retains its 28-inch carbon-steel barrel with a ventilated rib and cylinder bore, chambered for 2 3/4" shells. The original magazine plug remains installed, limiting capacity to 2 + 1 rounds for field compliance.
Remington’s gas-operated action, introduced on the Model 1100 in 1963, is known for reducing felt recoil and delivering reliable cycling with standard 16 gauge loads. This system later influenced several other Remington autoloaders.
