Product Description

    Western Field Model 14 SD14 .410 Bore Bolt-Action Shotgun – Gunsmith Special

This Western Field Model 14 SD14 is a bolt-action .410 bore shotgun produced in the 1950s–1960s by O.F. Mossberg & Sons for Montgomery Ward. A store-brand variant of the Mossberg 183, it features a 24-inch fixed full-choke barrel, a two-shot tubular magazine, and the distinctive brass-colored knurled magazine follower plug. Pre-1968 manufacture means the gun carries no serial number, adding period authenticity for collectors or tinkerers. Offered here as a gunsmith special, it will reward a knowledgeable buyer who wants a classic small-bore project.

    Condition

    Overall Condition: Poor condition.

Bore Condition: Poor – noticeable dirt, stains, significant corrosion or damage.

Rifling: Poor rifling – rifling heavily worn or filled with fouling or debris.

The magazine tube has been broken, visibly repaired, and is currently stuck in the shotgun. Exterior metal shows scratches, blemishes, and scattered rust. This firearm will require professional gunsmith work before it can be safely fired.

    What’s Included

    • Western Field Model 14 SD14 .410 bore bolt-action shotgun (Gunsmith Special)

Designed around Mossberg’s dual-lug rotating bolt, the Model 14 delivers reliable bolt-action operation in a lightweight .410 package. The straight bolt handle with round knob provides simple, positive cycling, while a left-side sliding safety tab offers familiar control placement.

The 24-inch carbon-steel barrel wears a fixed full choke, making it suitable for tighter shot patterns when hunting small game or controlling pests. A single front steel bead serves as the sighting system—standard for this shotgun’s era and intended purpose.

Feeding is through a two-shot tubular magazine under the barrel, for a 2+1 total capacity. The brass-colored knurled magazine follower plug is a notable visual cue unique to this Western Field series.

The hardwood stock features a schnabel-style forend and an oil/varnish finish, paired with a 13.25-inch length of pull that suits most adult shooters once restored. All metal surfaces retain their original blued finish.

Because the magazine tube is immobile and the bore shows heavy fouling and corrosion, this firearm is sold strictly as a project. It presents an opportunity to bring a classic bolt-action .410 back to life or to salvage period-correct parts.
