Norinco Type 86S Pre-Ban Bullpup AKM in 7.62x39 — Rare Chinese Import
This Norinco Type 86S is one of fewer than 2,000 bullpup AK-pattern rifles brought into the United States before the 1989 import ban. An early A000-prefix serial number places it in the first production lot, adding extra collector appeal. The rifle keeps the proven AKM operating system while shifting the action rearward, giving a 16.25-inch barrel in a compact overall package. Its dark grey/blue phosphate finish, integral steel carry handle, and detachable vertical fore-grip set it apart from standard Type 56 rifles.

Imported by CSI L.A. before the 1989 “non-sporting” rifle ban, this Type 86S is legally classified as a pre-ban rifle, allowing it to retain its bayonet lug, detachable vertical fore-grip, and standard-capacity magazines.
The bullpup layout shortens overall length without sacrificing the 16.25-inch barrel or ballistic performance of the 7.62×39 cartridge. More than 90 percent of its parts remain compatible with standard AKM/Type 56 components, simplifying maintenance and parts sourcing.
Construction centers on a stamped-steel receiver finished in dark grey/blue phosphate for corrosion resistance. The fixed steel stock, steel carry-handle upper handguard, and polymer lower handguard offer a rugged, service-grade feel.
Sighting is handled by a hooded front post and a two-position rear aperture built into the carry handle, giving a familiar sight picture while preserving the rifle’s compact profile. The right-side charging handle and long-stroke gas piston preserve the reliability collectors expect from the AK platform.
Chambered in 7.62×39 and fed from standard AK magazines, this rifle ships with both 30- and 20-round steel mags, making it range-ready while underscoring its period-correct configuration.
