Product Description

Winchester Model 1897 Takedown Field Grade 16 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun (1908)

Built in 1908, this Winchester Model 1897 Field Grade is a takedown, slam-fire-capable pump shotgun chambered in the early 2 9/16-inch 16 gauge. It features a 26-inch full-choke barrel, matching serial numbers on the receiver and barrel extension, and classic walnut furniture with a 12-groove forend. Collectors value this variant for its external hammer design, early 16-gauge chambering, and the convenience of Winchester’s takedown system.

    Condition

    Overall Condition: Poor condition.

Bore Condition: Fair - Generally clean, some residue or smudges, slight corrosion.

Bore Fouling: Mild Fouling - Light buildup of fouling or dirt.

Specific Condition Notes: The steel surfaces show scratches, blemishes, and widespread finish discoloration, with areas of rust and pitting. The walnut stock has a crack just behind the receiver. The barrel displays a bulge and is misaligned toward the muzzle.

    What’s Included

    • Winchester Model 1897 Takedown Field Grade 16 Gauge shotgun

This shotgun represents Winchester’s iconic exposed-hammer pump design, well-known for its robust action and slam-fire capability—features prized by early 20th-century hunters and law enforcement alike.

The takedown mechanism allows the 26-inch barrel and magazine assembly to detach quickly from the receiver, making transport and maintenance easier without altering factory fit. Matching serial numbers confirm that the barrel extension and receiver have remained together since manufacture.

An original 2 9/16-inch chamber underscores this piece’s pre-World War II heritage, predating the industry shift to the modern 2 3/4-inch 16-gauge shell. The full choke remains intact, offering tight shot patterns suited to upland game.

The shotgun retains its oil-finished walnut stock and 12-groove forend, both typical of Winchester’s Field Grade trim. Winchester “WP” proof marks are present on the receiver and barrel, affirming factory originality.
