Heckler & Koch designed the HK45 around a robust short-recoil DA/SA system. Variant 1 places the ambidextrous safety/decocker on the frame for intuitive thumb control, while the paddle-style magazine release operates from either side without changing grip.
The 4.46-inch cold-hammer-forged barrel uses polygonal rifling and an elastomer O-ring to tighten lock-up, extending barrel life and promoting consistent accuracy. HK rates the barrel for extended +P use and a projected 20,000-round endurance.
Forward and rear slide serrations, an external extractor loaded-chamber indicator, and fixed 3-dot luminous sights support rapid, low-light manipulation. A MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail on the dust cover accommodates lights or lasers for duty or home-defense roles.
The glass-fiber–reinforced polymer frame keeps weight down and strength high. A modular back-strap system lets shooters fine-tune grip circumference, while fully ambidextrous slide and magazine controls make the pistol equally suited to right- or left-handed use.
