Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Shield – First-Gen No-Thumb-Safety Compact .40 S&W, 3.1" Barrel, 7+1
Smith & Wesson’s first-generation M&P 40 Shield packs .40 S&W power into a slim 0.95-inch-wide frame, making it one of the early reliable micro-compacts in this caliber. This no-thumb-safety variant, produced in 2012 under the “HSB” prefix, retains the original hinged trigger design and sear deactivation lever while omitting a magazine disconnect. A clean bore, steel 3-dot sights, and three factory magazines round out a carry-ready package.

The M&P 40 Shield was introduced as a purpose-built concealed-carry pistol, delivering service-caliber ballistics from a 3.1-inch stainless barrel while maintaining sub-inch width. Its striker-fired action uses passive internal safeties and a trigger safety blade for consistent, snag-free operation.
This no-thumb-safety model appeals to shooters who prefer an uninterrupted grip and a straightforward draw stroke. The absence of a magazine disconnect further simplifies the manual of arms, yet the sear deactivation lever allows safe takedown without pulling the trigger.
A black Melonite-finished slide with rear serrations resists corrosion and provides a secure grip for charging. Laser-engraved markings denote the first-generation production run, and the early “HSB” serial prefix aligns with 2012 release units favored by enthusiasts.
Steel 3-dot sights offer a durable, high-contrast sight picture, while the polymer frame keeps overall weight low and delivers a natural 18-degree grip angle. With both flush and extended magazines included, the shooter can balance concealment with extra capacity.
