Colt 1899 Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter .44-40, 4.75" Barrel, 1st-Gen Revolver with Stag Grips
This first-generation Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter was manufactured in 1899 and retains the classic features collectors seek: a black-powder frame, screw-retained cylinder base pin, and the desirable 4¾-inch “gunfighter” barrel. Chambered in .44-40 Winchester and marked “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” on the barrel, it offers authentic turn-of-the-century appeal. The revolver wears aftermarket one-piece stag grips that complement its aged blued and case-hardened patina.
Condition
Overall Condition: Very good condition – shows only light, superficial signs of prior handling or use.
Bore Condition: Fair – generally clean with minor residue or light corrosion.
Bore Rifling: Fair – worn lands and grooves with some loss of definition.
Specific Condition Notes: Metal surfaces display an even, age-appropriate patina. Rifling is blemished yet remains visible, and the revolver operates correctly.
What’s Included
- Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter revolver with aftermarket one-piece stag/antler grips
Produced during the peak of the American West era, this revolver carries serial number 185012, confirming its 1899 production and first-generation status. Matching partial serial “852” on the fluted six-shot cylinder aligns with the frame, trigger guard, and back strap, underscoring its original configuration.
The 4¾-inch barrel length offers the balance favored by working cowboys and lawmen of the time. Its fixed open sights—a forged front blade paired with a top-strap rear groove—remain unaltered, preserving historical authenticity.
Factory roll marks include the rampant Colt logo and patent dates on the left side of the frame, while an inspector’s “N” stamp appears on the back strap. The bull-seye ejector-rod head, phased out in later production, is still present, adding another desirable period-correct detail.
The revolver’s carbon-steel frame displays a muted case-hardened patina that contrasts with the blued cylinder and barrel. Together with the rugged stag grips, it presents a striking, collectible look while maintaining mechanical functionality.
