The Model 640-1 is a Centennial-series J-frame with an enclosed hammer, set up as a double-action-only revolver for a clean, snag-free profile. The internal-hammer design keeps the top strap smooth while maintaining reliable DAO operation with a smooth-face trigger.
Constructed entirely of stainless steel, the frame, barrel, and cylinder wear a satin stainless finish. The 2.125 inch barrel uses a short underlug and a protected, knurled ejector rod, and the five-shot cylinder is fluted. Controls include the standard S&W checkered cylinder latch.
Sight regulation is straightforward, with a pinned serrated ramp front sight and a fixed rear notch formed in the top-strap trough. The left side of the barrel is rollmarked "S&W .357 MAGNUM."
This example is a pre-lock configuration with no internal lock window. Decorative scroll engraving appears on the cylinder, the left frame (sideplate area), and forward of the trigger guard, with additional flourishes around the left barrel rollmark. Matching serial numbers are present on the butt and yoke.
The revolver is fitted with one-piece wood boot-style grips featuring checkering and carved scroll accents, complementing the engraving and compact profile. Made in the USA, it retains the classic five-shot .357 Magnum J-frame formula with quality stainless construction.
