FIE Model D-38 .38 Special Over/Under Derringer – 3" Nickel-Barreled, Matte Black Frame
This FIE Model D-38 is a pocket-sized, over/under derringer that chambers the full-power .38 Special cartridge. Built with chrome-plated 3-inch barrels mated to a matte black zinc-alloy frame, it offers a striking two-tone look while keeping overall weight to a minimum. Produced in the late 1970s through 1990, the D-38 represents one of the few American-market derringers from that era capable of firing standard .38 Special loads, making it a collectible example of late-20th-century personal-defense handguns.

The D-38 follows the classic Remington Model 95 layout, using a break-open action that loads two rounds stacked vertically. A single-action spur hammer and barrel selector switch give the shooter control over each shot.
Polished nickel/chrome-plated carbon-steel barrels contrast with the matte black enamel frame, delivering corrosion resistance and a distinctive appearance. Fixed iron sights—a front blade and an integral rear notch—suit the close-range role of this micro derringer.
An external locking latch secures the barrels when closed; the latch’s slightly loose fit noted in the condition section does not impede basic function but is worth monitoring. Ivory-colored plastic grips add vintage flair while maintaining a slim profile for pocket carry.
With production ending when FIE declared bankruptcy in 1990, surviving Model D-38 pistols offer collectors a snapshot of the era’s compact defensive firearms. Chambering the widely available .38 Special cartridge further enhances its practical and historical appeal.
