Built on a stamped AKM-pattern receiver marked "DDI Knoxville, TN, USA" and "CALIBER 7.62x39MM," this rifle reflects the Knoxville-era, pre-acquisition DDI production from the mid-2010s. It uses the classic long-stroke piston, rotating bolt system with a 90-degree gas block, delivering the expected AKM operating characteristics in a USA-made package.
The 16.25 in barrel is threaded and fitted with a birdcage-style flash hider. The rifle wears a matte black finish with stamped steel receiver construction, paired with durable black polymer handguards and a black textured polymer pistol grip.
A Texas Weapon Systems "Dog Leg" hinged railed dust cover provides a full-length Picatinny rail across the top. The original rear sight has been removed for this configuration, while a hooded front sight post remains in place.
The metal side-folding skeleton stock uses a push-button hinge for quick deployment and folds for storage or transport. It includes a rubber buttpad and a rear sling loop, and the length of pull measures 14.25 inches. While the 47U designation often denotes an underfolder pattern, this example is configured with a side-folding stock.
