The New Englander is a single-shot, single-action percussion sidelock with an external hammer and a non-set single trigger. It uses a #11-cap nipple for ignition and is clearly rollmarked with the factory safety warning: "BLACK POWDER OR PYRODEX ONLY — DO NOT USE SMOKELESS POWDER."
Its 26" round blued steel barrel is paired with a full-length under-rib and two ramrod pipes. Sighting is handled by practical iron sights: a ramped steel blade front and an open rear sight with a stepped elevator for adjustable elevation.
The walnut stock presents a full-length profile with a straight shotgun-style butt. Metal furniture includes a blued steel buttplate stamped with the T/C logo and a blued trigger guard. An oval T/C escutcheon is set into the left fore-end. Length of pull measures 13.5".
Markings include "New Englander" script on the barrel and "THOMPSON: CENTER ARMS ROCHESTER, N.H. .54 CAL." The lockplate shows a color case-hardened finish with factory scroll engraving. The serial number is marked on the breech/tang. This rifle was made in the United States.
