As Remington’s first gas-operated shotgun, the Sportsman-58 represents a transitional design that led directly to later models like the 878 and 1100. The gun incorporates the model’s hallmark adjustable gas system at the magazine/fore-end cap, often referred to as Dial-A-Matic, allowing the shooter to tune operation for 2 3/4 inch loads.
The barrel features a ventilated rib with a front bead and a mid-rib bead for clear alignment. It is marked "12 GA FOR 2 3/4 OR SHORTER SHELLS." This example is further equipped with a Cutts-style ported compensator and an adjustable choke sleeve, providing muzzle control and choke flexibility at the muzzle.
The receiver is blued steel and carries factory game-scene and scroll engraving, with waterfowl depicted on the left panel and pointing dogs on the right. An "REP" proof mark is present, consistent with Remington production.
Classic walnut furniture includes a pistol-grip stock with checkering, a grip cap medallion, and a ribbed buttplate. The long-pattern walnut fore-end wears point-style checkering.
