The RPDS operates on a semi-automatic, long-stroke gas piston system with an adjustable gas regulator at the gas block. The 20.5 inch long, non-quick-change barrel is threaded and fitted with a knurled thread protector, and an integral folding steel bipod is mounted near the muzzle for supported shooting.
Feeding is via non-disintegrating segmented belts carried in drums, guided by the RPD-pattern top cover and feed tray, with an under-receiver drum/belt hanger to secure the carrier. Capacity is listed at 50+1. Four drums and eight sets of links are provided, giving the rifle a ready-to-run belt-fed setup.
