Ruger AR-556 Free-Float Handguard 5.56 NATO Semi-Auto Rifle – 16" Barrel, 30+1
This 2021-production Ruger AR-556 pairs Ruger’s cold hammer-forged 16" 4140 CMV barrel with a free-float aluminum M-LOK handguard and continuous Picatinny top rail, creating a lightweight, purpose-built carbine that weighs just 6.7 lb. Built at Ruger’s Mayodan, North Carolina facility, it features a 1:8 RH twist for broad bullet compatibility, a Ruger bird-cage flash suppressor on a 1/2-28 threaded muzzle, and a six-position telescoping stock that lets shooters dial in length-of-pull from roughly 10.25" to 13.50".

- One 30-round Magpul PMAG GEN M2 polymer magazine
The cold hammer-forged 4140 CMV steel barrel delivers proven durability and accuracy, while the 1:8 twist stabilizes a wide range of 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington bullet weights. The barrel is threaded 1/2-28 and fitted with Ruger’s standard bird-cage flash suppressor, giving shooters immediate muzzle-device flexibility.
A free-floating aluminum M-LOK handguard keeps weight down and heat away from the support hand, while its full-length Picatinny top rail provides uninterrupted optic and accessory mounting space. Internal gas delivery uses a direct-impingement system for familiar AR-15 parts compatibility.
Forged 7075-T6 aluminum receivers wear a black hard-coat anodized finish, and Ruger’s enlarged charging-handle latch improves grip under gloves or when optics are mounted. A selector-type safety offers straightforward control.
The six-position telescoping stock and textured polymer pistol grip supply a solid, adjustable interface. Combined with the rifle’s 6.7-lb weight, the setup balances maneuverability with recoil control.
