This Model 28-2 is built on the robust S&W N-frame and chambered in .357 Magnum, with the ability to accept .38 Special ammunition. Its 4-inch heavy, ribbed, pinned barrel and matte, non-checkered anti-glare topstrap and rib deliver the classic Highway Patrolman configuration.
The sighting system pairs a pinned serrated ramp (Baughman-style) front sight with an adjustable square-notch rear blade featuring a white outline. Controls include a case-hardened, checkered-spur exposed hammer and a case-hardened trigger with a serrated face, operating in double-action/single-action with an internal hammer block safety.
The revolver wears checkered walnut target stocks with S&W medallions on a square-butt grip frame. Its six-shot fluted cylinder and carbon steel construction carry a factory blued/black finish across the frame, barrel, and cylinder.
Factory markings are present: "SMITH & WESSON" on the left side of the barrel, ".357 CTG. / HIGHWAY PATROLMAN" on the right side, the S&W logo on the left side of the frame, and "MADE IN U.S.A. MARCAS REGISTRADAS SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS." on the right. The yoke cut is marked "MOD. 28-2." Production falls within the 1969–1982 era, and the box end label and yoke cut carry matching serial information.
