This Model 649-2 is built on the S&W J-frame and made entirely of stainless steel, including the barrel, frame, and fluted cylinder. The satin/brushed stainless finish provides a clean, utilitarian appearance suited to regular carry and use. Capacity is five rounds of .38 Spl., and the barrel length is 2 inches.
The Bodyguard profile incorporates a shrouded hammer with an exposed spur, combining snag resistance with the ability to thumb-cock. The action is double-action/single-action (DA/SA) and not SAO, giving the option of a deliberate single-action trigger press or a smooth double-action stroke.
Sights are fixed, with a serrated ramp front and a fixed notch rear integral to the topstrap. The revolver wears black rubber finger-groove grips with checkered panels for a secure hold on this compact frame. A checkered cylinder latch and partial ejector-rod shroud round out the practical control features.
Markings include "SMITH & WESSON" on the left side of the barrel and ".38 S.&W. SPL." on the right. The right side of the frame reads "MADE IN U.S.A.
