The XD-40 Service Model is configured with a 4 inch hammer-forged steel barrel treated with Melonite for surface hardness and corrosion resistance. Its forged steel slide is also finished in Black Melonite and includes front and rear cocking serrations and a loaded chamber indicator.
The striker-fired, short-recoil operated action uses Springfield Armory's USA Action Trigger System with a central safety blade. Safety features include a grip safety, trigger safety, firing pin block, and a loaded chamber indicator, providing multiple passive layers without altering the firing procedure.
The black polymer frame is full-size and incorporates an integral multi-slot accessory rail. A dual captive recoil spring with a full-length guide rod supports reliable operation. Capacity is 12+1 with the included double-stack magazines.
Sights are steel, fixed, and dovetailed, with a white-dot front blade and a two-dot rear notch for a clear 3-dot picture. The barrel uses a 1:16 twist.
