This Model 642-2 follows the J-Frame Centennial pattern with a fully enclosed hammer and double-action-only trigger. It carries a five-shot fluted cylinder and a compact 1.875-inch barrel, making it a micro-size revolver built for simplicity and reliability.
The frame is aluminum alloy with a matte silver finish, paired with a stainless steel barrel and stainless cylinder. The barrel is rollmarked "SMITH & WESSON .38 S&W SPL +P," and the right sideplate is script-marked "Airweight." The right frame bears "SPFLD, MA S&W U.S.A." with the S&W crest. The model is marked 642-2 on the yoke.
Sights are fixed, with an integral serrated ramp front and a rear top-strap groove. The revolver also features an internal lock and an internal (enclosed) hammer for snag-free carry characteristics.
