The M&P15-22 Sport uses a semi-automatic blowback action optimized for .22 LR and retains AR-15-style controls for familiar handling. It has a receiver-mounted, 2-position safety lever and an integral shell deflector. The design omits a dust cover and forward assist.
Its 16.5 in carbon steel barrel is Armornite finished and threaded 1/2x28, capped with an A2 flash suppressor. A 1:15 twist complements .22 LR use, and the rifle feeds from a 25-round magazine for a 25+1 capacity.
The polymer receiver and slim 10 in polymer M-LOK handguard help keep weight to about 5 lb while providing mounting flexibility. A continuous top Picatinny rail runs from receiver through the handguard, and polymer flip-up front and rear sights are included.
The collapsible, 6-position M4-style stock with rear sling loop and A2-style polymer pistol grip deliver straightforward ergonomics. Overall length is approximately 33.8 in extended, and length of pull is listed at 10.0. The rifle is finished in black and produced in the U.S.A., with markings that include "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MA MADE IN U.S.A." and the S&W logo. The ejection port displays a silver bolt marked M&P.
