Manufactured in the United States during the 1950s–early 1960s era, this Model 20 carries clear rollmarks: 'PROOF TESTED - 12 GA. 2¾ CHAMBER.' and 'J.C. HIGGINS MODEL 20 - SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. 583.56.' The 583.56 code denotes High Standard manufacture for Sears, aligning the gun with a well-regarded American maker of the period.
The barrel is equipped with a ventilated rib featuring a matte top to cut glare, and it wears the J.C. Higgins 'POWER-PAC' perforated muzzle device with patent text on the housing. The front bead is mounted directly on the Power-Pac, and the gun is set up for 2 3/4 inch shells. This configuration is commonly referred to as the PowerPac choke in J.C. Higgins literature.
The action is pump-operated with right-side ejection and a tubular magazine. A user-stated capacity of 2+1 is noted. The receiver includes a cross-bolt safety and an ON/OFF magazine cut-off toggle (tube feed toggle switch), and an engine-turned (jeweled) bolt is visible through the ejection port.
Construction is all-steel with a blued finish on the receiver and barrel. The walnut pistol-grip buttstock carries an inlaid J.C. Higgins medallion and a small blank initials plate, along with a red ventilated J.C. Higgins recoil pad with a black spacer. Up front, a grooved walnut forend provides a secure grasp.
Length of pull measures 13.75 inches.
