Part of the S&W Kit Gun family, the Model 51 was the .22 Magnum variant and saw production from circa 1960–1974. This example falls in the 1968–1974 range, evidenced by its M-prefix serial format adopted in October 1968. It is marked MOD-51 on the yoke cut and 22 M.R.F. CTG. on the barrel.
The revolver is built on the J-frame with a square-butt configuration and a fluted six-shot cylinder. It uses a double-action/single-action mechanism with an exposed hammer and a smooth-faced trigger, offering traditional S&W handling in a compact package.
The 3.5 in. steel barrel has an integral rib and a short underlug. Sight regulation is handled by a serrated ramped front sight paired with an S&W micrometer-click adjustable rear sight, providing a precise and practical sight picture for .22 WMR.
Construction is steel with a blued finish on the frame, cylinder, and barrel. The stocks are checkered walnut Magna-style grips with S&W medallions. An unbranded aluminum grip adapter is installed on the front strap/trigger guard to enhance purchase.
