The Second Issue configuration is identified by its unshrouded ejector rod and 2-inch tapered barrel, paired with a six-shot fluted cylinder. The compact D-frame design provides a balanced profile while maintaining full six-round capacity in .38 Special.
Construction is all carbon steel, including the barrel, frame, and cylinder, with a high-polish blued finish. Checkered wood grips complement the classic Colt look, and the exposed hammer supports both double-action and single-action operation.
Sighting is straightforward and durable: a fixed ramped front blade with a serrated rear face and a fixed rear notch integral to the topstrap. The cylinder rotates clockwise and is released by Colt’s left-side, rearward-sliding latch.
Markings include "DETECTIVE SPEC. .38 SPECIAL CTG." on the barrel, the Colt Hartford, CT address on the right side of the barrel, and the Colt Rampant Pony on the left frame. The serial on the crane/yoke carries an M-prefix, consistent with the observed configuration details.
