This Type I example pairs a 4-inch barrel with the early separate barrel bushing and an internal hammer, all in a compact steel frame. It is a blowback, single-action design with an 8+1 capacity using a single-stack detachable magazine.
The sights are fixed, with a half-moon front blade and a rear notch set in a dovetail. The slide carries vertical rear serrations and the Rampant Colt trademark behind the serrations.
Correct slide legends are present: "PATENTED APR. 20, 1897 DEC. 22, 1903," "COLT'S PAT. F.A. M'F'G.
CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.," and "COLT AUTOMATIC CALIBRE .32 RIMLESS SMOKELESS."
Proofs and inspection marks include the Colt "VP" Verified Proof triangle on the left front trigger guard and a small inspector's mark on the opposite trigger guard bow. Grips are black checkered hard rubber with the "COLT" ribbon and molded circular rampant-colt device. Made in the United States.
