The Model 36 Chiefs Special is built on the J-frame round-butt platform and chambered in .38 Special, combining compact size with dependable DA/SA operation. Its blued carbon steel frame, cylinder, and 2-inch tapered barrel present a cohesive, period-correct look.
Controls and internals reflect the era: an exposed hammer with a hammer-mounted firing pin, a non-shrouded short ejector rod, and the standard post–flat-latch cylinder release. The color case-hardened hammer and trigger add a distinctive factory touch.
Sight regulation is straightforward and durable, with a serrated ramp front sight paired to a square-notch rear integral to the top strap. The checkered walnut Magna-style grips with S&W medallions provide a secure hold on the J-frame round-butt.
Markings include "MOD. 36" on the yoke, "SMITH & WESSON" on the left side of the barrel, ".38 S.&W. SPL." on the right, and the Springfield, MA USA rollmark on the right frame. The ABW serial prefix aligns with production circa 1983–1984, and the revolver is made in the United States.
