The Model 649 Bodyguard Stainless is a compact, stainless steel J-frame with a 2-inch barrel and five-round cylinder, designed for dependable carry and straightforward operation. This no-dash variant is from the 1980s and is identified by the .38 Special-only chambering that came before the later .357 Magnum versions.
Its Bodyguard profile combines a shrouded hammer with an exposed, checkered spur, allowing single-action cocking while remaining snag-resistant. The revolver operates in double-action/single-action and uses a round-butt J-frame for compact dimensions.
The sighting system is fixed, with a serrated ramp front sight and a top-strap rear groove. The ejector rod remains exposed, paired with a short under-barrel lug. Factory markings include "TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT.
OFF." and "MADE IN U.S.A. MARCAS REGISTRADAS SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS." The yoke cut is stamped "MOD. 649."
Constructed with a stainless steel frame, cylinder, and barrel, this example is finished in stainless throughout. It is fitted with aftermarket Pachmayr rubber grips featuring gold medallions.
