The 442-1 follows the Centennial enclosed-hammer J-frame design with double-action-only operation and a five-shot cylinder. This no-internal-lock configuration is chambered in .38 Special +P and is rated for continuous use with +P ammunition. The barrel measures 1.88", overall length is approximately 6.3", and the unloaded weight is approximately 14.6 to 14.7 oz.
Construction pairs an aluminum-alloy frame with a stainless steel barrel and a carbon-steel cylinder, all finished in matte black. This combination keeps weight low while maintaining a consistent, uniform exterior finish across major components.
Sights are fixed, featuring an integral ramp front and a rear top-strap groove. The fully enclosed hammer reduces snag potential during draw and reinforces the DAO configuration.
An aftermarket Hogue rubber finger-groove monogrip is installed in place of the factory boot grip, providing a secure hold. Markings include the S&W trade-mark logo on the sideplate and the "SPFLD, MA S&W U.S.A" legend on the right side of the frame. This revolver is made in the United States, and the factory box label lists Model 442-1 and caliber .38 Special +P.
