Built as the commercial semi-automatic variant of the SCAR-H/Mk17, this 17S uses a short-stroke gas piston system with an external gas regulator. The earlier, single reciprocating charging handle is side-swappable and is installed on the left side on this rifle, matching the discontinued pre-NRCH configuration.
The 16.25 in barrel is cold-hammer forged, chrome-lined, and free-floating, with a 1:12 RH twist to stabilize typical 7.62 NATO projectiles. The barrel is threaded and fitted with a PWS FSC30 hybrid compensator/flash suppressor. The gas block integrates a folding front sight, and the rear sight folds and includes a numbered elevation drum.
The stock assembly is polymer and highly adjustable, with telescoping length of pull, a side-folding hinge, an adjustable cheekpiece, and a buttpad. Length of pull is adjustable to approximately 12-14.5 in, and the rifle’s factory weight is about 8.0 lb. An A2 pistol grip is fitted.
A monolithic, T-marked MIL-STD-1913 top rail runs the full length of the upper, and the polymer fore-end provides accessory rails at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Receiver construction pairs a hard-anodized aluminum upper with a polymer lower/trigger module. Markings include FN HERSTAL BELGIUM, FNH USA — FREDERICKSBURG VA, and the FN oval logo. Manual safety is standard.
