It features an enclosed internal hammer and double-action-only operation, along with fixed sights in the classic integral front ramp and top-strap notch configuration. The matte/satin silver finish is paired with black textured synthetic/rubber-style grips with S&W medallions.

Built on Smith & Wesson's J-frame, this Model 642-1 keeps the profile small while maintaining a 5-round .38 Special +P chambering. The Airweight configuration uses an aluminum alloy frame paired with a stainless steel barrel and stainless cylinder.
This revolver is set up with an enclosed (internal) hammer and a double-action-only action type. The fixed sight system consists of an integral front ramp and a rear notch milled into the top strap.
Markings include "SMITH & WESSON" and ".38 S&W SPL +P" on the barrel, with "Airweight" and "SPFLD, MA / S&W U.S.A." on the right side of the frame. The left side of the frame shows the S&W circular trademark logo.
Notable frame detail: there is no internal-lock keyhole visible on the left side of the frame. The revolver also has an S&W-style checkered/serrated cylinder release latch and a fluted 5-shot cylinder.
