This U.S.-made Hawthorne-Sentry Model 558 is a Montgomery Ward-marked, single-shot .22 S-L-LR bolt rifle with a 23.5" barrel, blued carbon steel construction, and a clean, shiny bore. The barrel roll-mark reads "HAWTHORNE – SENTRY" over "MONTGOMERY WARD & CO. — 558." Pre-1968 production is indicated by no serial number observed, as was not required at the time.

The Model 558 features an open-top receiver with right-side ejection and a turned-down bolt handle. It uses a bolt-action single-shot configuration with a single-round capacity and a tang safety. The trigger guard is stamped steel.
The 23.5" carbon steel barrel and blued receiver are paired with open iron sights: a ramped blade front on a banded base and an open notch rear with a stepped elevator. The receiver has no scope grooves.
The hardwood stock has a straight comb and semi-pistol grip with no checkering, providing a simple, durable setup. Length of pull measures 13.0".
Markings include the "HAWTHORNE – SENTRY" over "MONTGOMERY WARD & CO. — 558" roll-mark on the barrel. The forend underside is drilled for a swivel/stud; hardware is not present. No serial number is observed (not required pre-1968).
