The Model 642-1 is a Centennial-pattern J-Frame with an internal, enclosed hammer and DAO operation, designed for a smooth draw and consistent trigger press. The smooth-faced trigger complements the DAO action, while the checkered cylinder release latch provides positive control during reloads.
Construction pairs a matte silver aluminum-alloy frame with a stainless steel barrel and matte stainless, fluted cylinder. Factory markings include the S&W crest and Airweight script on the right sideplate, “SMITH & WESSON .38 S&W SPL. +P” on the barrel, and Springfield, MA roll marks on the frame. The model designation “642-1” appears in the yoke cut.
Sights are fixed, with an integral serrated ramp front and a rear groove, giving a simple and durable sight picture. Black synthetic boot-style grips with S&W medallions keep the footprint compact while maintaining a secure hold.
