Smith & Wesson Model 657-4 Mountain Gun .41 Rem. Mag., 4-Inch Stainless DA/SA Revolver
This Smith & Wesson Model 657-4 Mountain Gun is a stainless, pre-lock N-frame in .41 Rem. Mag. with the hallmark 4-inch tapered barrel and short underlug. It features adjustable sights, a round-butt frame, and frame-mounted firing pin, with aftermarket Pachmayr wraparound finger-groove grips installed. A late-1990s Mountain Gun variant, it combines a lighter-profile barrel with the strength of the N-frame in a less common .41 Magnum configuration.

The Mountain Gun configuration brings a 4-inch tapered stainless barrel with a short/partial underlug and a serrated top rib for a streamlined carry profile. The adjustable rear sight and ramped, pinned front blade provide a clear, serviceable sight picture tailored for field use.
This revolver is built on the stainless N-frame in a round-butt configuration, with double-action/single-action operation and an exposed hammer. It uses a six-shot fluted cylinder and a knurled ejector-rod tip, maintaining the classic S&W control layout.
Materials and finish are stainless throughout the frame, barrel, and cylinder, with a satin/brushed presentation. Rollmarks include "Made in U.S.A. Marcas Registradas Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Mass." and a large S&W trademark on the left sideplate.
Notable mechanical details include a frame-mounted firing pin and no internal key lock (pre-lock). The .41 Rem. Mag. chambering and Mountain Gun designation (Model 657-4) place this example in a desirable late-1990s production era with features enthusiasts look for in this series.
