Manufactured in 1991, this pre-ban Sporter Match HBAR retains its bayonet lug and A2 flash suppressor, features that define many early-1990s Colt AR-15 configurations. It is a full-size AR-15 platform rifle with the R6601 designation and period-correct large-pin slotted front pivot screw.
The 20" steel HBAR barrel is threaded and fitted with an A2 birdcage. It has a 1:7 twist and is marked "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 HBAR," indicating Colt proof and magnetic-particle inspection. The chambering is 5.56mm NATO, and the heavy-profile barrel provides the classic HBAR configuration.
The upper is an A2 fixed carry handle type with a case deflector, forward assist, and dust cover. Sights are the A2 iron system, with a front post in a triangular front sight base and an A2 rear sight featuring the 8/3 elevation drum. The triangular front sight base includes a bayonet lug and a riveted sling swivel.
Furniture is the A2 pattern, including rifle-length round ribbed two-piece polymer handguards, a fixed stock with a trap-door buttplate and sling swivel, and an A2 pistol grip with finger swell. The receiver is a forged aluminum alloy with a hard-anodized finish. Operation is gas-operated, direct impingement with a rotating bolt, and controls include a manual safety selector. Length of pull is 14.0 inches.
The lower receiver is marked "SPORTER MATCH HBAR" and "CAL .223," while the barrel is marked "5.56 NATO 1/7 HBAR." Included are three 30-round magazines in the USGI-pattern aluminum STANAG style, and the rifle has a 30+1 capacity.
