The Model 1400 uses Winchester's gas-operated semi-automatic system and is chambered for 2.75 in shells with a 4+1 capacity. The receiver is alloy with a blued finish, and the bolt shows jeweled/engine-turned detailing visible through the ejection port.
The custom 19.5 in steel barrel retains a vent rib with a mid-bead and brass front bead. It has been altered to a cylinder bore configuration and no longer accepts chokes; there are no internal threads or external choke devices. The rib is marked "Poly-Choke," and the barrel rollmark shows its original "MOD" designation prior to alteration.
Stock furniture is walnut with diamond-panel checkering and a pistol-grip profile. It wears a Winchester red ventilated recoil pad with black/white line spacers, plus a grip cap medallion with a red "W." The forend is walnut, and a knurled magazine cap completes the front assembly. Length of pull is 14.0 in.
Markings include Winchester proof stamps on both the barrel and receiver ring. The barrel is rollmarked "WINCHESTER — MODEL-1400 — 12 GA — 2¾ CHAM. — MADE IN U.S.A. — WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL — MOD."
