The 686-5 Plus is the seven-shot variant of Smith & Wesson's L-frame .357 Magnum, pairing a compact 3-inch barrel with a robust stainless-steel build. The unfluted cylinder and full underlug give this revolver its distinctive look and purposeful design.
This pre-lock configuration uses a frame-mounted firing pin with MIM hammer and a smooth-faced MIM trigger. The wide, checkered hammer spur provides positive purchase, while the double-action/single-action system delivers familiar S&W operation.
Sight regulation is handled by a pinned red-ramp front sight and a micrometer-adjustable rear. The barrel includes a serrated top rib, a shrouded ejector rod, and a full underlug. The factory S&W-marked black rubber finger-groove grips are installed, with an additional compact boot grip included.
All major components wear a satin stainless finish, including the frame, cylinder, and barrel. Chambered in .357 Magnum, it also accepts .38 Special, offering flexibility at the range. Factory yoke/frame markings confirm this example as a 686-5 despite packaging labeled 686-6.
