Built at Rifle Factory Ishapore and dated 1967 on the receiver wrist, this 2A1 was manufactured new for 7.62x51 NATO. The model features strengthened receiver steel and a redesigned extractor for rimless cartridges. It uses a square-sided, detachable 12-round magazine and retains the charger bridge for charger loading.
The rifle has been converted into a handy carbine configuration with a shortened approximately 19-inch barrel. The original SMLE nose-cap was removed during the sporterization, and the rifle retains an SMLE upper handguard. A front barrel band with sling swivel is present.
The stock is a sporterized Monte Carlo butt with a cheek swell, complemented by a ventilated rubber recoil pad and contrasting spacers. Controls include the SMLE-type safety lever. Capacity is 12+1 with the included magazine.
Sighting equipment consists of an SMLE-pattern sliding ramp tangent rear sight and a protected front post on a banded base. The rear sight leaf is stamped "ICR 1969 R.F.I.," indicating a later arsenal-dated component. The barrel bears the import mark "N.A. RIDGE N.J." while the receiver wrist shows the Indian crest with "RIFLE 7.62mm 2A1 R.F.I. 1967."
