Ranson Remington Model 1863 Zouave .58 Cal Percussion Rifle, Italian Reproduction, 33 Inch Barrel
This Italian-made Ranson reproduction of the Remington Model 1863 "Zouave" two-band short rifle presents the classic .58 caliber muzzleloading percussion pattern with authentic period details. It features a blued barrel, a case-colored lock with a spread-wing eagle on the lockplate, and brass furniture throughout. Condition
Overall Condition: Fair condition, showing extensive signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Condition: Good - Clean, well-maintained, minor wear marks.
Bore Rifling: Good Rifling - Intact, well-defined lands and grooves.
Specific Condition Notes: The action is not fully functional. To set the hammer, the trigger must be held forward while the hammer is pulled back, and engagement is inconsistent. There are scratches and blemishes on the stock and metal finish. A small hole has been drilled in the left side of the stock a few inches in front of the rear band.
What’s Included
- Extra percussion nipple (stored in buttstock patchbox)
- Bullet extractors
This single-shot percussion rifle follows the Remington 1863 "Zouave" pattern with an external hammer and a snail-style bolster that incorporates a clean-out screw. The lock is case-colored and factory engraved with a spread-wing eagle, and the barrel is marked "BLACK POWDER - CAL .58". Capacity is one round, loaded from the muzzle.
The rifle wears a 33-inch blued barrel paired with iron sights: a block-and-blade front sight and a folding leaf rear sight with a sliding elevator. A steel ramrod with a tulip/concave head seats projectiles and charges in keeping with the original design.
The full-length hardwood stock includes a hinged patchbox in the butt, with brass furniture components throughout, including the buttplate, trigger guard, forend cap, and two barrel bands. Two sling points are provided via a front band swivel and a ring on the trigger guard. Length of pull measures 13.5 inches.
Markings confirm Italian manufacture and proofing: the rifle bears Italian proofhouse crowned shield proofs, the PN black-powder mark, and an AB date code, along with "RANSON ITALIA spa – made in Italy." It is a faithful Italian reproduction of the Remington Model 1863 "Zouave" two-band short rifle in .58 caliber.
