Built on the robust L-frame, the Model 586-2 pairs a carbon steel construction with a polished blue finish. The 6-inch barrel is heavy with a full underlug and a serrated rib, providing excellent balance and a steady sighting plane. Chambered in .357 Magnum, it also accepts .38 Special for flexibility.
The sighting system combines a ramp front sight with a red/orange insert and a micrometer-click adjustable rear sight. This setup offers precise, repeatable adjustments for a clear, consistent sight picture.
This example retains pre-MIM, pre-internal-lock internals with a hammer-mounted firing pin. The hammer and trigger are casehardened, and functional controls include a checkered cylinder latch and a knurled ejector-rod tip. It uses a non-counterbored (unrecessed) cylinder and holds six rounds.
Stocks are checkered hardwood target grips with S&W medallions on a square-butt frame. Rollmarks and proofs include the S&W crest/Trade Mark on the right sideplate; "MADE IN U.S.A. MARCAS REGISTRADAS SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS." on the left frame; "SMITH & WESSON" on the left side of the barrel; and "S.&W. .357 MAGNUM" on the right side of the barrel. Marketed as part of the Distinguished Combat Magnum series, the 586-2 revision is known for incorporating the updated hammer nose/bushing parts that avoided the earlier M-modification recall.
