The pistol employs DA/SA operation with a slide-mounted safety/decocker and an external hammer. Rear cocking serrations aid slide manipulation, and the fixed 3-dot sights are dovetailed front and rear for durability and straightforward alignment.
Construction details include an aluminum-alloy frame with a black anodized finish and a matte black slide. The one-piece wrap-around textured black synthetic grip features the S&W medallion, delivering a secure hold. Weight is approximately 21 oz (series spec).
Factory markings include "MOD CS9" on the frame, the Chief's Special legend with S&W crest on the slide, and "9MM PARABELLUM" on the barrel hood. Made in the United States and discontinued by 2006, the CS9 represents the final era of S&W's 3rd-Generation metal-frame pistols.
