The Model 11-48 uses a semi-automatic long-recoil action with right-side ejection and an internal tubular magazine. It is configured for a 3-round capacity. The receiver is not marked "Sportsman 48."
The plain 24-inch barrel is marked for 12 gauge and "2 3/4 or shorter shells" and carries a fixed Improved Cylinder choke. A single brass front bead provides a clean sight picture. The PH barrel code denotes June 1961 for the barrel only; Model 11-48 barrels are interchangeable.
Controls include a cross-bolt safety and a separate charging handle. A knurled magazine cap secures the forend and magazine assembly.
