This no-dash Model 686 represents early production from 1983–1986, identifiable by its pre-recall configuration without the "M" overstamp. The yoke cut is marked "MOD. 686," and the frame carries the "MADE IN U.S.A. Springfield, Mass." rollmark with the S&W monogram on the right sideplate.
Constructed in stainless steel throughout the frame, barrel, and cylinder, the revolver wears a brushed/satin stainless finish. It uses the L-frame with a full-length underlug and a serrated top rib, along with a six-shot fluted cylinder for .357 Magnum.
The sighting arrangement includes a pinned ramp front sight with a plain black blade. The factory adjustable rear sight has been removed to accommodate the installed Weaver 307 no-drill scope base.
Ergonomics are set up with aftermarket Pachmayr black rubber grips featuring gold medallions. The revolver operates in double-action/single-action and retains the classic 686 profile in an early-production stainless configuration.
