This antique Springfield Armory Model 1868 Trapdoor stands out as a customized .50-70 Government single-shot rifle featuring the Allin-system trapdoor breechblock and an external side hammer. It has been sporterized with a 26-inch shortened barrel and a shortened fore-end accented by decorative brass tacks and wire wrap. Original U.S. military markings remain, and dual matching serial numbers are present on the receiver and barrel shoulder.
Condition
Overall Condition: Fair condition, showing extensive signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Overall Condition: Fair - Generally clean, some residue or smudges, slight corrosion.
Bore Rifling: Fair Rifling - Worn rifling, slight loss of definition.
Specific Condition Notes: There is finish loss and pitting present on the rifle. The stock shows numerous blemishes and scratches. The bore is dark and blemished; however, the rifling is still present.

This Model 1868 employs the Allin-system trapdoor breechblock, combining an external side hammer with a simple single-shot mechanism in .50-70 Government. It retains a full-size profile with a steel barrel and receiver and a wood stock.
The rifle has been sporterized/customized. The barrel was cut to 26 inches, the fore-end was shortened, and the original barrel bands were removed. The fore-end features a wire wrap, and decorative brass tacks are inlaid in the stock. A front sling swivel loop hole is present; swivels are not installed.
Period markings remain intact. The lockplate is marked with a spread-wing eagle over "U.S. SPRINGFIELD," and the buttplate tang is stamped "U.S." Dual matching serial numbers are present on the left side of the receiver and the barrel shoulder.
Sighting is via iron sights, with a pinned blade front and an open ladder/leaf rear. The rifle has a 13.5-inch length of pull and maintains a straightforward, single-round capacity.
